Fall Premieres!

Leaves are changing and temperatures are dropping.  Fall is in the air and it is nicely welcomed after a hot and grueling summer.  What is also nicely welcomed are all of the new series and seasons of your favorite and new television shows.  This year is very busy for this entertainment junkie – 17 shows both returning and new are slated for my viewing this year.  Below is the list of returning and new shows that will be watched for the next few months:

How I Met Your Mother
Revolution
NCIS
The New Normal
Vegas
Supernatural
Chicago Fire
Nashville
Last Resort
The Big Bang Theory
Grey’s Anatomy
Glee
Made in Jersey
Fringe
Once Upon a Time
Revenge
666 Park Avenue

As you can see, my tastes run all over the spectrum.  There are 8 new series that I will be watching and one – The New Normal – has already grabbed my attention and my laughter.
In a world where the definition of family is changing – and whether or not you like it doesn’t matter – television follows suit and brings the emerging family dynamic of 2 gay men starting a family with a surrogate to the small screen.  On the political side, the show tells the story of 2 loving individuals’ decision to bring a child into this world and bring that child up into a loving and caring family.  They have had bigotry face them and challenge them as individuals and future parents. The show is trying to show life as it is because in most major cities, you will see either 2 men or 2 women walking down the street holding hands with a child – their child.  That is the new family dynamic that is happening.  On an entertainment side, the characters and story line are funny, happy, loving, ridiculous (in a good way) and over-the-top.  You can’t help but laugh, love, worry, and care right along with the characters in the 21 minutes you spend with them every week.  My hope is that the viewing public won’t dismiss it and its subject as too much to handle and get rid of it too soon.
The only other show that has already begun is Glee.  In its 3rd season, Glee had a very rough up and down year.  It went high to low so many times I thought it was the stock market.  Glee really had to kick start the 4th season with a bang especially since season 3 ended with an uncertain future ahead – is Rachel on the show anymore? What happens with Finn? Where does Kurt belong now that he was snubbed from NYADA?  Lots of unanswered questions but the season premiere brought closure and a path for the new season.  Whether or not this path works is still up in the air.  Whenever a show brings on new characters and gets rid of old, very much loved ones it’s a toss-up as to whether it will work.  With 2 episodes down, the show is starting off well with good songs and good balance between the life at McKinley High and NYADA. Only time will tell if this year’s Glee Club can have the same strength and determination as their predecessors.  As long as there is good music and talented singers, I will certainly keep watching.
Besides the new shows – Revolution, Vegas, Chicago Fire, Nashville, Last Resort, Made in Jersey and 666 Park Avenue – my returning shows I am most excited to see, especially the sophomore shows of Once Upon a Time and Revenge.  Those were my 2 favorite shows last year and I have very high hopes for them this year.  Most sophomore seasons have a lot to live up to and like most sequels in movies, they fail to deliver.  With Once and Revenge, I don’t think that will be the case.  I think the writers and producers have found the right story and plot to keep episodes fresh and exciting for many seasons to come.  Check back later this fall for an update on how many shows I am still watching and why I stopped watching some shows.

Once Upon A Time

Out of all of the new shows I had decided to watch this year, it comes as so surprise that the one show I have kept up with the most is the show from the same producers as Lost – Once Upon A Time.    The show is about a boy, Henry, who believes that his town – Storybrooke, Maine – is really the Enchanted Forest and everyone has forgotten who they are. He came to that idea from a book he was given by his teacher, Mary Margaret who Henry believes is really Snow White.   He believes his adoptive mother, Regina, is really the Evil Queen, his therapist is Jiminy Cricket, the John Doe in the hospital is Prince Charming, and the one who can save everything is Emma, his birth mother who gave him up for adoption 10 years ago. And did I mention that Henry believes Emma to be the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming?   Henry also believes that the Evil Queen cast a curse on the whole Enchanted Forest which is why they can’t remember who they are. Still with me? Good. Let’...

"For a Few to be Immortal, Many Must Die" - In Time

It is an interesting topic – living forever.   We all have said at one point or another we want the fountain of youth to bless us with eternal beauty and life.   But what would living forever mean? You would see history happen right before your eyes – and see it written in history books for children to read during school.   If you had been living forever, you could have seen the curse start for the Red Sox in 1918 and then get broken in 2004.   And again in 2007.   But what it would it mean?   By living forever, you don’t like a day in your life. If you live forever, what makes tomorrow so special.   The people in District 12 have it better than the rich – they have to make very moment, every second count. In Time, starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried, is set in 2161 where a genetic alteration has allowed humanity to stop aging past age 25.   But people are required to earn more time in order to stay alive past age 25 or their ...

The Last Song

Before I begin this review, I must put a disclaimer. The only way I got through this movie was to look past Miley Cyrus as the lead. With that said, so starts my review. With imagination running out in Hollywood, producers have to look to other forms of entertainment for inspiration. Nicholas Sparks books have always been a very good place with hit movies such as A Walk to Remember, Message in a Bottle, and The Notebook. In 2010, Hollywood made 2 of his books into movies - Dear John and The Last Song starring Miley Cyrus and Greg Kinnear. Before seeing this movie, I made it a point to read  the book so I could compare the two mediums. This story wasn't a typical Sparks novel in the sense of about finding your true love. This is a story about the dysfunctional yet oddly functional relationship between an 18-year old teenage and her estranged father. Roni and her 10 year old brother come to live at their father's house in South Carolina, on the water, for the summer much to ...
