When you have a list of over 400 books on your to-read list, you tend to forget that you put some of them on the list. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel is one of those books. I used the randomizer on my Goodreads list to give me my next book after Landline. It gave me Station Eleven. I tried racking my brain, willing myself to recall when I put this on my list and my mind couldn’t come up anything. I guess that is what happens with over 400 books on your list. Station Eleven is about the post-collapse United States and Canada and the characters that have lived through it (and some that haven’t).  A flu broke out in Toronto that had an incubation period of less than 24 hours once exposed.  Only 1 in 3000 survived the outbreak.  Everything is gone - electricity, internet, gas, everything that we take for granted all gone in a couple of years.  The story moves back and forth between pre-collapse and post-collapse as well as between 3 main character lives. ...

Visually spectacular. That is how I would describe Catching Fire, the second installment in the Hunger Games movies.  From the “ruins” of the districts to the Capital parties to the 75 th Hunger Games arena the movie was visually a masterpiece.  Everything was just as I had pictured in the book. Catching Fire picks up a few months after the 74 th Hunger Games where Peeta and Katniss won in the first time 2 people became victors.  Katniss is finding it hard to keep her thoughts together and questions everything, especially her relationship with Gale and Peeta.  After a disturbing visit from President Snow, Katniss tries to make the best of the Victory Tour and convince everyone that she and Peeta are madly and happily in love.  It doesn’t work and for that the 75 th Hunger Games – the Quarter Quell – will reap (choose) from the existing pool of victors. Since I finished the book I have been racking my brain trying to come up with a solid explanation why Roth ended the series the way she did.  Is it to teach everyone that no matter what happens the human race will mend each other? Is it to show us that no matter what someone does to you family will always come first? Or is it to show that no matter what bad things happen?  I fear that I will never know the answer to why she ended it the way she did. All I know is I do not like it and that is the choice I make.
